I once spent three days on a corporate shoot in a windowless basement, watching a producer spiral because the client wanted “more energy” in a shot that was physically impossible given the lighting we had. They didn’t need a better sensor or a more expensive gimbal; they needed someone to tell them that “energy” is…
I spent most of my life looking through a viewfinder, obsessing over how a single bounce card could change the mood of a scene, so I tend to view everything through the lens of light and placement. When I decided to figure out how to start a vegetable garden, I was met with the same…
I once spent three days on a documentary shoot in a coastal village, sweating through my shirt and fighting a dying generator, only to realize at the wrap party that I’d forgotten to charge for the extra day of prep. I wasn’t just short on cash; I was short on the respect my time deserved….
I once spent four hours in a humid terminal in Djibouti, sweating through my shirt because I’d insisted on bringing a secondary lighting kit that ended up being useless for the actual location. I had followed every “pro” checklist I could find, yet I was the one fighting my own kit instead of focusing on…

I once spent four hours in a humid rental house in Bogotá, staring at a sensor that had a speck of dust right in the middle of a high-contrast sky, all because some kid on a freelance gig thought a pressurized air can was a substitute for actual care. People spend thousands on the latest…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in a crowded market in Marrakech, watching people navigate social spaces with more grace than any polished “networking expert” could ever dream of. Most of the advice you find online about how to start a conversation with a stranger feels like a gear review for a camera you…
I spent a decade watching people treat real estate like a high-end sensor upgrade—thinking that if they just bought the most expensive “kit” possible, their life would suddenly look more cinematic. They get blinded by the prestige of a mortgage, ignoring the fact that a house, much like a camera, is just a tool that…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in the Highlands last year, lugging a Pelican case that weighed more than my actual talent, only to realize the most important tool I had was a single 50mm prime and a bounce board I found in the back of a van. Most people looking for a complete…
I once spent three days on a documentary shoot in a rain-slicked alley in Dublin, fighting with a flickering tungsten light and a handheld rig that felt like it was made of lead, all to get one perfect, moody sequence. I thought I’d mastered the craft, only to sit in a dark edit suite a…
I once spent forty-eight hours straight in a basement suite, fueled by lukewarm coffee and the mounting dread of a client’s technical rider, only to realize the “master file” I was prepping was useless because I’d misread a single codec requirement. It wasn’t a failure of creativity or lighting; it was a failure of paperwork….
