I once spent three weeks finishing a documentary short, only to have the entire thing mothballed because I’d used a track that sounded “perfect” but lacked the proper clearances. I sat in a dark edit suite, staring at a beautiful sequence that was effectively dead on arrival because I’d prioritized the mood over the paperwork….
I’ve spent half my life watching people spend six months’ rent on a new drone, only to fly it like they’re playing a video game, producing nothing but shaky, nauseating sweeps that no editor on earth can save. They treat this supposed complete guide to drone filming like it’s a manual for a new piece…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in a coastal village in Ireland, waiting for a specific type of overcast light to hit a fisherman’s face, only to realize I was so focused on the exposure that I hadn’t actually spoken to the man for three days. I was treating him like a lighting setup…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in the Highlands once, working with a lighting kit that weighed more than the crew, only to realize the sun had done 90% of the heavy lifting for free. I remember sitting in a cramped control room ten years ago, staring at four different monitors while the talent’s sweat started to catch the overhead fluorescent light. We had three high-end cinema cameras, a synchronized clock, and enough cables to rewire a small apartment, yet the footage was useless because we hadn’t actually planned how…
I once spent three days on a corporate shoot in a basement with zero windows, watching a kid half my age try to fix a muddy, flickering key by buying a more expensive plugin. He thought the software was the solution, but the truth was much simpler: his light was hitting the fabric at an…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in the Highlands, obsessing over the exact Kelvin temperature of a single window light, only to realize later that half my audience wouldn’t even know what was being said because I’d neglected the basics. We spend thousands on anamorphic glass and high-bitrate codecs, thinking that’s what makes a…

I spent three hours last Tuesday watching a kid unbox a $4,000 cinema camera just to film himself talking about how much he loves “content creation.” It’s the same cycle I’ve seen for twenty years: people think a higher bit rate or a sharper sensor is going to fix a boring story or a poorly…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in the Highlands once, shooting on a camera that felt like it was held together by prayer and electrical tape, only to realize in the suite that the footage was practically useless because I hadn’t thought about the rhythm of the scene. People keep searching for a “complete…
I spent three weeks on a documentary in the Highlands once, shooting on a rig that cost more than my first house, only to realize the footage was absolute garbage because we hadn’t planned for the rhythm of the scene. You can spend your entire life chasing a “complete guide to cutting technique” through YouTube…
